2019 SHSAA Scholarship Award Winners

The South High School Alumni Association is pleased to present our 2019 Scholarship award winners. This year's class has 10 winners who represent graduating South High School seniors as well as qualified students who are related to members of SHSAA. This class consists of excellent individuals who display qualities of academic achievement, service to others, a strong work ethic, and personal potential. This year's awards of $11,000 are our single highest single-year total. SHSAA has now provided more than $70,000 in scholarships to more than 50 young people. Thank you to all SHSAA members who make this service possible!

Victoria Zubovich

Victoria is a sophomore at Ohio State University majoring in Public Affairs with a specialization in Public Management and Political Science. She carries a 3.9 GPA and describes herself as an activist, civil rights advocate, and change agent. “I want to be that ‘somebody’ who will make a change.” Several teachers and professors rated her as one of their best-ever students. She is the granddaughter of Frank Zubovich SHS class of 1949.

Molly Glaze

Molly completed her freshman year at Ohio University with a bang. She was the only freshman to earn a spot in a study abroad program in Paris designed for seniors. She attributes this success to her attitude, her capabilities, and her ability to communicate with others. Her major is Journalism and Strategic Communication with a minor in Health Administration.  She is the granddaughter of Sharon Selby SHS class of 1964.

Jamie Thacker

Jamie will be attending Ohio Northern in the Fall of 2019 to pursue a major in Graphics Arts. Since an early age, Jamie recognized she had a special gift for seeing the world differently than others. Early diagnosis of ADHD turned into a life-changing challenge to develop her creative and artistic skills. Her goal is to “design artwork that is seen and loved by millions.”  She is committed to making a difference in the world. She is the granddaughter of Brenda Keller Thacker (SHS class of 1961).

Hannah Tolliver

Hannah will be attending Capital University in the fall pursuing a major in Pre-Med. Being selected as a member of the National Honor Society, participating in the Science Olympiad, playing varsity basketball and softball, and being active in FFA are examples of her work ethic and talent. Her interest in medicine stems from first-hand experience dealing with numerous family health issues that most young people her age do not encounter. Hannah is the daughter of 2001 SHS alum Mike (James) Tolliver (2001).

Landon Uriarte

Landon will be attending Ohio State University Newark campus majoring in Information Systems. Life-long interests and work with computers and other technology are strengths he intends to convert into a career. He was selected to participate in the CCP program which placed him in college-level credit courses while still in high school.  school. Good communication skills, problem-solving strengths, and a strong work ethic 

Torian Bailey

Torian just completed his freshman year at Ohio University with a major in Actuarial Science. He aspires to be an actuary and loves the challenge and promise of a business career. In high school, he operated his own web business selling shoes and earning money for college. He describes himself as a self-motivated problem solver with an entrepreneurial spirit. Torian is the grandson of Jeri Burton, SHS class of 1966.

Jordan Yeck

Jordan is a 2019 graduate of South High School with a 3.8 GPA. She will be attending Dennison University majoring in Environmental Studies. Her priority goal is to “make a significant impact on my community in various ways: the conservation of nature, environmental social justice, or creating policies that will impact the way humans interact - especially with nature.” She excelled in both extracurricular activities and academics.

Elizabeth Doerue

Elizabeth will be attending Ohio State University Newark campus majoring in nursing beginning this fall. She is a 2019 graduate of South High School where she achieved a 3.4 GPA while being involved in many additional activities including being a mentor and role model to eighth-grade young women at South. One priority goal in her mentoring work is, "Be to others whom you needed when you were younger."  Elizabeth was born in Liberia and with her family has adjusted well to her new life.

Serina Dweh

Serina is a 2019 graduate of South High School. She will be attending Dennison University majoring in Biology. Her life priorities are best exemplified by her involvement in the Harmony Project, the National Honor Society, and Girls Empowerment. She was also the senior class Treasurer and was captain of the cheer, softball, and tennis teams. During her sophomore year, she earned her credentials as a childbirth doula. She wants to become a nurse practitioner of a physician assistant.

Katie Somphanthabasouk

Katie is a 2019 graduate of South High School. She will be attending the University of Memphis majoring in nursing. She achieved a 3.8 GPA and worked diligently to increase her self-confidence and independence. As the daughter of an immigrant mother, she assumed many responsibilities at a young age. She is committed to hard work and service.
